According to an inquiry, a German-American billionaire who vanished six years ago inexplicably close to Switzerland’s famous Matterhorn summit may be living in Moscow with a Russian mistress. Retail tycoon Karl-Erivan Haub vanished in April 2018 in Zermatt, Switzerland, while preparing for a ski mountaineering competition. The businessman was last seen ascending the mountain by himself one morning in a lift. This was odd, according to his trainer, who knew him to be cautious and organised. He never managed to return to his lodging. His corpse was not found during a six-day search that involved numerous helicopters and mountain rescuers. Three years later, in 2021, a German court ruled him legally deceased. Haub was a co-owner and former managing director of Tengelmann Group, a massive German retailer and grocery chain. Along with his two kids and a corporation employing over 75,000 people, he left behind his wife. After he vanished, Christian Haub, his younger brother, was appointed Tengelmann’s lone CEO. A trial witness saw Christian swear in 2021 that there was no proof the billionaire, whose estimated net worth was £5.2 billion, was still alive. But according to a recent investigation by German broadcaster RTL, Haub was found in Moscow along with Veronika Ermilova, a much younger woman. Haub was allegedly living a covert double life with Ermilova, who is reported to have ties to a Russian event management company. Haub, who would now be 64 years old, is said to have made 13 phone calls to Ermilova’s phone in the three days prior to his disappearance in 2018, according the RTL and media outlet Stern’s inquiry. Significant phone talks ensued, one lasting more than an hour, which sparked suspicions that he was plotting to orchestrate his own death with Moscow and Ermilova’s help. According to images received by RTL journalist Liv von Boetticher in the autumn of 2022, Haub appears to be in Moscow in February 2021. “As far as I’m aware, Christian Haub had access to these pictures when he claimed, under oath, in a May 2021 district court statement, that he had ‘no credible proof’ that his brother was still alive.” According to Boetticher, Karl-Erivan Haub “had intense telephone contact with an alleged lover before his disappearance and who has connections with the Russian government.” “I’m positive it was a staged escape rather than a skiing accident.” According to Boetticher, the businessman’s motivation is probably due to his extensive commercial connections within the nation. “We believe Karl-Erivan could have run into problems in the West due to his business dealings with Russia or Russian partners,” the spokesperson stated.
