Written by Ayobami Okerinde The Nigerian Super Eagles will have a new coach in the next two weeks, according to a statement made by Senator John Enoh, Minister of Sports. Since Jose Peseiro resigned as the head coach of the Super Eagles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to name a permanent replacement. Remember that the NFF held a call for candidates in March to fill the position of national head coach, succeeding Jose Peseiro, in advance of the World Cup qualifying matches? The team’s coach for the past two friendlies against Ghana and Mali, Finidi George, was one of Peseiro’s assistants. In his first game, Finidi led the Super Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Ghana; however, in his second game, the team lost 2-0 to Mali. Enoh discussed the subject and said he has spoken with the NFF in a conversation with Channels Televisions Sports on Thursday. “Unfortunately, there isn’t a coach for the senior national team,” he stated. Finidi George was the only official in charge of our two friendly. The NFF is initially in charge of hiring a coach. I have gotten in contact with the NFF because I believe Nigerians were surprised that hiring a coach would take so long after the AFCON and after coach Peseiro’s contract expired and wasn’t renewed. The senior national team will have a new coach in the next one or two weeks at the latest, but NFF is aware and mindful that our next qualifiers are in June.” The Minister of Sports also emphasised that, following their elimination from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Super Eagles could not afford to miss the 2026 World Cup, which would be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. “I don’t think our start has been very strong. Because we didn’t go for the last World Cup, it’s a shaky one, so there’s a mileage to cover. We have to do everything because we cannot afford to miss the next. “I think everyone expects that we should be able to consolidate on that and take it from there, coming after AFCON and coming after we have had a tremendous show,” Enoh continued. In June, the Super Eagles will play in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. They will be hoping to bounce back after their disappointing draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe
