The president of Kenya announced that Gen. Francis Omondi Ogolla, the head of the armed forces, had passed away following a military helicopter crash in the nation’s west. Eleven additional military men were onboard the chopper with Gen. Ogolla, the highest ranking military commander in Kenya. There were only two survivors. President William Ruto described it as a “moment of great sadness” for the nation during a press conference. He had called an emergency meeting of the security council earlier. According to Mr. Ruto, the collision occurred at 12:20 BST (12:20 local time). According to the president, an aviation investigation team from the Kenya aviation Force has been sent to determine what caused the incident. The crash occurred in Elgeyo Marakwet county, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the country’s capital. “Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed shortly after take off,” stated Ruto. After holding the positions of Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Commander of the Air Force, Gen. Ogolla was appointed by Mr. Ruto in April of last year. Mr. Ruto praised Gen. Ogolla, who served as the president’s top military advisor, as a valiant officer who lost his life while performing his duty. “Our motherland has lost one of her most valiant generals, gallant officers, service men and woman,” Mr. Ruto stated to the people. On Friday, April 19, the country will observe a three-day period of mourning. According to Mr. Ruto, the flags of the Republic of Kenya and Kenyan embassies overseas would fly at half mast. According to the website of the Kenyan Defence Ministry, Gen. Ogolla enlisted in the Kenya Defence Forces for the first time on April 24, 1984. Next week marked his 40th anniversary of serving in the military. According to the ministry, he trained as a fighter pilot in the US Air Force before starting his career as a 2nd Lt in the nation’s air force. He was appointed Commander of the Kenya Air Force in 2018.
